Bristol artist Wins Bombay Sapphire Prize 2004

Richard Box from Bristol is the winner of the Bombay Sapphire Prize 2004 – the world’s biggest award for artists, designers and architects working with glass. With a prize value of £20,000, this prestigious annual award that rewards and promotes excellence in contemporary glass was presented on 20th October.
Working with the Leverhulme Trust at the Bristol University physics department, Richard Box designed an inspirational installation called Field. It was created by planting 1,301 fluorescent light tubes into the earth underneath an overhead power line covering an area of 3,600m2. The electromagnetic fields from the power cables above, lit the tube lights to create this unique installation.

As its name suggests, the installation took place in a field near the A46 between Bristol and Bath in February 2004. Inspired by a childhood story of a boy who played with fluorescent tubes under pylons near his home, this design is both magical and educational.

Judged by the Bombay Sapphire Foundation, who set up the award to reward excellence in contemporary glass, the judging panel consists of international designers and glass experts including: Ron Arad, Tom Dixon, Nicole Farhi, Thomas Heatherwick, Lesley Jackson, Dan Klein and Nadja Swarovski.

Designer Ron Arad described Field as, “an incredible installation that is not only beautiful, but also reveals a danger that is hidden to the naked eye”.

“Field used an everyday glass object to create a highly interactive artwork that was successful on many different levels,” says Richard Box. “The piece drew attention to the presence of the electromagnetic field in a dramatic way, making the invisible, visible. For many who saw Field, it was a beautiful, magical and sinister experience, which was both thought provoking and educational.”

The overall winner of the Bombay Sapphire Prize 2004 was announced at an awards event on 20th October at the 20th Century Theatre in London, where the work of the 30 designers/artists who entered is on display.

Entries for the Prize included glass works from a range of fields including architecture, design, jewellery, visual and applied art.

Bombay Sapphire - the premium gin in the strikingly designed blue glass bottle – is a keen supporter of design. The Bombay Sapphire Prize has celebrated the work of some of the world’s most talented artists and designers. Last year’s winner, lighting designer, Paul Cocksedge has seen his career sky-rocket since winning the award. Most recently he was one of the four short-listed finalists for the 2004 Designer of the Year.
